Steps to becoming a host family
Fill in our application form and you’ll get an email with many documents. Please watch our safeguarding video (below), read through the documentation, and complete the Covid-19 questionnaire, agreement, and fire risk assessment.
It's really important that you fully understand all our host family guidelines, host family agreement, Fire Risk Assessment form, and our Covid19 policy before applying. They'll guide you through what our students expect during their stay.
Secondly, you’ll need to upload or email:
- Your ID (passport or driving license)
- A gas safety or direct heating certificate
- A current utility bill
- A fully enhanced DBS certificate (we’ll help you with this if you don’t have it).
We’ll arrange a host family visit or video call with one of our team, who’ll go through the following:
1. Our homestay checklist
2. Take pictures of the family, room, and some areas of your home
3. Verify copies of all ID (these are kept confidential to us only)
4. Check the risk assessment
We’ll also hold regular homestay reviews and visits to check up on all the families and their homes.
To become a host family, you must add students to your home and car insurance to meet our duty of care policy. We partner with an insurance company that offers bespoke guardianship insurance and advise you to go for this – but if your current insurer is willing to add guardianship as an additional option, then this will work too.
Once we’re happy, you’ll become a fully registered Exeter Homestay UK family and we’ll start to offer you placements when they become suitable to your family. Just be aware that during COVID19 we’ll follow the self-isolation guidelines for the countries necessary.

Know someone who'd make the perfect host? We'll give you £20 for every family you refer.
We'll get this over to you after the family's completed their second homestay.

Hosting children at your home means you play a huge role in helping protect them. Let’s face it, no one wants to hear about safeguarding, et alone have to deal with it – but the reality is you might have to!
You must watch this video before becoming a host family. It will make sure you’re aware of the issues and warning signs, ensuring we successfully care for the children who stay with us.
